Do I Need to Charge VAT on Gumroad Sales?

No — since January 2025 Gumroad acts as Merchant of Record and handles VAT/GST collection and remittance on every sale, bundled into the platform fee.

Short answer: no — Gumroad handles this for you. Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad has operated as the full Merchant of Record on every sale, which means Gumroad — not you — calculates, collects, and remits sales tax, VAT, and GST across the jurisdictions where your customers are. You don’t register for VAT in individual countries, you don’t configure tax rates, and you don’t file VAT returns on Gumroad income — Gumroad does it as part of the transaction.

What “included in the 10% fee” actually means

This tax-collection-and-remittance service is bundled into the platform fee you already pay — you can’t opt out of it to get a lower rate, and you don’t pay anything extra on top for it either. Whether a customer is in Germany, the UK, or Japan, the VAT/GST handling is the same fee, already accounted for.

Why this matters more than it sounds like it should. Before merchant-of-record models existed, digital sellers going international faced a real compliance burden — registering for VAT in each country above that country’s sales threshold, tracking rates that differ by jurisdiction and sometimes by product type, and filing returns on a schedule that has nothing to do with your own business calendar. That work costs real money in accounting time even for a small seller. Gumroad absorbing it is one of the genuine reasons the 10% fee buys you more than just “hosting checkout.”

What you still owe tax on. VAT/sales tax on the transaction is Gumroad’s job. Your own income tax — on the net revenue you actually keep after fees — is still yours to handle, same as any other income. Merchant-of-record status changes who deals with the transaction tax, not whether you owe income tax on what you earn.

If you’re weighing whether a different platform handles this as cleanly before you move any sales elsewhere, that’s worth checking directly on the platform’s own pricing page — MoR status isn’t universal across competitors. The fee side of that comparison, side by side with Gumroad’s numbers, is here.
