Gumroad Discover Fee 30%: Is It Worth It?

Sales made through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace — where Gumroad surfaces your product to shoppers browsing the platform, not people who found you directly — carry a flat 30% fee, with payment processing included in that number. Compare that to the ~13% effective rate on a typical direct sale (10% + $0.50 platform fee, plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing), and the jump is real: Discover sales cost roughly double to triple what a direct sale costs, depending on price point.

So is it worth it?

The honest answer is it depends on what Discover sales are replacing.

• If a Discover sale is incremental — a customer who would never have found you otherwise, buying a product you’d otherwise have sold zero of — then 30% of something beats 10% of nothing. Discover exists because it puts your product in front of people with no other path to you.
• If a Discover sale is cannibalizing a direct sale — a customer who follows your social links or newsletter but ends up buying through Discover anyway — you’re paying an extra ~17 percentage points for a sale you might have gotten for less through your own channels.

How to tell which one is happening: check your Gumroad sales export for the referral/source field per transaction. If most Discover sales come from search terms or browse categories rather than your own audience, that’s incremental traffic and the fee is the cost of a channel you don’t otherwise have. If Discover sales cluster around your product launches — when your own audience is already primed to buy — some of that volume is probably direct traffic getting routed through Discover by accident (or by Gumroad’s own defaults), and worth checking your product settings over.

The practical move: don’t opt out of Discover reflexively — 30% of an incremental sale is still profit — but track the source of Discover sales for a month before deciding it’s “worth it” or not. A flat percentage in isolation doesn’t tell you the counterfactual, and the counterfactual is the only number that actually answers this question.
